Love your compost workshops

On average, half of what we put in our rubbish bins in Kāpiti each week is food and garden waste (as found in our 2017 solid waste survey [PDF 1.98 MB]). Our Love your Compost campaign aims to change that!

When food and garden waste end up in landfill it rots, rather than composting. This produces harmful methane gas (a potent greenhouse gas), and all the goodness of the food and garden waste is lost in the sealed landfill.

By composting your food and garden waste, you can:

  • reduce your waste going to landfill
  • make a positive impact on climate change
  • improve the health of your soil by enriching it with organic matter and nutrients.

Love Your Compost gives you all the information you need to make composting work for you. And we’ll give you a $40 voucher towards your chosen composting system or collection service!

Workshops

Composting is a great way to:

  • stop food and garden waste going to landfill
  • create great fertiliser for your garden
  • help protect our climate.

There are many different ways to compost, and these workshops are designed to help you find the right method for your household.

Composting 1.0: Introduction to composting, worm farms and bokashi Zoom workshop.

Registrations for our Love Your Compost workshops are open. To register for a workshop, complete the form below.

Voucher terms and conditions

  • Vouchers can only be redeemed by Kāpiti residents.
  • Only one voucher per household.
  • Only one voucher per purchase.
  • Only one purchase per voucher; that is, if your purchase is less than $40, the remaining amount can't be transferred to another purchase.
  • The voucher can be redeemed towards a compost bin, worm farm or Bokashi bin of your choice OR a food or garden waste collection service subscription.
  • When we issue a voucher, we'll ask you for your name, email address, and home address, which will be recorded together with the serial number on your voucher. This is so we can keep track of redeemed vouchers while the programme is running, and follow up with you on whether the voucher has helped you reduce your waste.
  • To measure how much food and garden waste Kāpiti is diverting from landfill through the “Love your Compost” campaign, we'll send you a survey when you first sign up, and again after six months. All survey responses will be handled confidentially under the Privacy Act 2002; we'll never publish individual responses.
  • For home composting systems, vouchers can only be redeemed in store with our participating retailers, not on online orders.
  • All home composting systems are subject to in-store availability. Stocks may be limited at times.
  • The discount for a collection service can't be used for an existing subscription. It is only valid for new service subscriptions.
  • Vouchers can't be redeemed after the expiry date printed on the voucher.
  • Council is not responsible for the performance of your compost system or collection service; contact the retailer or service provider if you have any issues with the performance of what you have spent your voucher on.
