Everything Kāpiti - We're all in for civil defence response
20 May 2025
Our district experienced an eye-watering 60mm of rain over a 24-hour period in the weekend. Council spends about $1.5 million a year on stormwater pipe and open drain maintenance as well as sump cleaning and rural culverts and swales sweeping, which keeps us very busy.
Some ways our community can help include ensuring drains and gutters are maintained, not blowing leaves and lawn clippings onto the street, and securing garden waste and structures. Even with all these measures in place, flooding can happen, and we’re currently seeking feedback on our updated flood maps to ensure they're as accurate as possible. If you’d like to talk about what the maps mean for your property, come and chat to us at our drop-in session tonight in Raumati or in Waikanae this Saturday 24 May. Check our website for more details.

Investing in infrastructure to better cope with things like more intense and frequent rainfall is all part of our plan of building a resilient future for Kāpiti, which we're sticking to – read more about what we've delivered so far.
