Waste grants available - construction and organic waste targeted
19 May 2025
Grant funding for projects that reduce waste going to landfill is open for applications, with initiatives aimed at building and organic waste prioritised.
Kāpiti Cast District Council’s Waste Levy Grants are now open for applications for both community and business initiatives.
Up to $30,000 is available to share between community projects, and $20,000 (50 percent co-funded by the applicant) between businesses for waste reduction projects.
Waste Levy Grants funding comes from government out of the levies paid by contractors and other people who dispose of waste via transfer stations or to landfills. No rates funding is involved.

“We love the Kāpiti Coast’s enthusiasm for waste minimisation and are always heartened to see the projects that come through,” waste projects manager Robbie Stillwell says.
“There are always some inspirational ideas and it’s great to be able to support these to fruition.
“Minimising waste means it costs less for collection, and landfill sites will last longer and produce fewer climate change causing greenhouse gases.”
Projects that divert construction and demolition waste and organic waste from landfill are particularly encouraged.
“Reducing these waste streams is where we can make the biggest impact,” Mr Stillwell says.
“Over half of the waste going to our transfer stations is from the building sector – stuff like concrete, timber, plastics and glass.
“As Kāpiti continues to grow we need to improve how we deal with this, so we’re really keen to see projects that address this.
“Food and garden waste is another big contributor we are focused on.”
Mr Stillwell says the fund is always heavily subscribed so it’s important initiatives and applications are well-prepared.
“The better the application, the greater the chance of success. If you need to talk your plans over, please get in touch and our team can provide some guidance.”
