Air Chathams suspension a major blow for Kāpiti

5 Jun 2026

Kāpiti Coast Mayor Janet Holborow says Air Chathams decision to suspend flights between Paraparaumu and Auckland from 31 July is a major loss for the district.

“We understand this is a commercial decision made in tough conditions, but it will be deeply felt by the people who rely on this service to travel for work, connect with friends and whānau, and support our local visitor economy.

“Air Chathams has served our community well, stepping in when the national carrier withdrew.

“Despite strong support from the community and Council, the economic reality is challenging and businesses are having to make tough decisions to remain viable.”

Air Chathams took over the Kāpiti to Auckland route in June 2018 after Air New Zealand withdrew air services at short notice.

COVID-19 had a major impact on New Zealand’s domestic aviation sector, and in May 2020 Council agreed to provide Air Chathams with a loan to help sustain air services for Kāpiti.

Mayor Holborow says Council remains in active discussions with Air Chathams about repayment of the loan and is hopeful conditions improve enough for services to return in future.
