Sweeping leaves us prepared for the season

11 Jun 2026

During autumn and winter, fallen leaves, wet weather and debris can quickly affect roads and stormwater drains. Regular road sweeping helps keep streets safer and cleaner while reducing the risk of blocked sumps and localised flooding.

Our contractor operates a planned district-wide programme sweeping towns and neighbourhoods on a rotational basis, including Paekākāriki, Raumati, Paraparaumu, Waikanae and Ōtaki. In addition, extra sweeping is scheduled in places where leaves, debris or surface water are more likely to build up.

This work becomes even more important during periods of heavy rain and strong winds, when the stormwater network can come under extra pressure. Keeping roads and drains clear is one of the easiest ways we can help communities stay ready for stormy weather.

While our contractor works to manage seasonal build-up, everyone has a part to play. Small actions at home and in your neighbourhood can help prevent blockages, reduce the risk of flooding and support a more resilient network.

How we can all help

DO:

Keep private sumps, gutters and drains on your property clear of leaves and debris, especially before forecast heavy rain or strong winds.

DON’T:

Sweep or blow leaves and debris into road channels, sumps or culverts. This can block the network and increase the risk of surface flooding during wet weather.

By working together, we can help stormwater systems work as they should, protect the environment and be better prepared for stormy weather year-round.

If leaves cannot be cleared and are causing flooding or blocking sumps, please contact us
