Community invited to help shape Environment Strategy for Kāpiti

Kāpiti Coast District Council is asking the community for feedback on its Environment Direction of Travel, a discussion document that sets out the proposed direction for a new Environment Strategy.

The Direction of Travel focuses on four areas: land use, air quality, biodiversity, and water and ocean health. It tests proposed principles, objectives, and measures to help inform the Environment Strategy’s development.

The Strategy will support Kāpiti to be resilient and thriving for current and future generations.

Kāpiti Coast District Mayor Janet Holborow says the Environment Strategy will provide a shared roadmap for protecting and enhancing te taiao, our environment over the next ten years.

“The Direction of Travel document brings together what people have already told Council through Vision Kāpiti, our early community engagement on the Long-term Plan 2027-37, and other relevant Council strategies,” says Mayor Holborow.

“Our community has said how much they value the natural environment and want to see it protected and restored for future generations.

"We have our coastline, mountains, streams, rivers and everything in between – we really do have it all.

"It's one of the reasons people to move to Kāpiti, but with that comes a responsibility to care for our special places.

"Delivering on our aspirations for the environment takes effort from all of us and we want to hear from as much of our community as possible.

“We want to know whether we’re focusing on the right things, what we may have missed, and what matters most so that we can set the right course.”

Feedback on the Direction of Travel will be used to inform the development of the Environment Strategy, which Council intends to finalise in December 2026.

Community ideas will also help shape an Environment Action Plan in 2027.

Feedback on the Direction of Travel is open from 28 September until midnight Tuesday 27 October 2026.
