Seniors’ October offers connection, activity and fun across Kāpiti

29 Sep 2026

Seniors’ October – a month-long programme of community led events and activities for older people across Kāpiti returns next month.

Launching on International Day of Older Persons on 1 October and delivered by Age Concern with support from Kāpiti Coast District Council, the programme offers opportunities to connect, learn, get active, try something new, and have fun with local groups, clubs, and organisations.

Throughout the month, local groups, clubs, and organisations are inviting older people to get involved and discover what’s on offer year-round.

There are more than 60 events available from dancing, writing, bowls, crafting, yoga and tai chi to bushwalks, bike rides, garden tours, and lifelong learning opportunities.

Manager Climate Action and Connected Communities Monique Engelen says Council's involvement in Seniors’ October is part of an ongoing commitment to creating an Age Friendly Kāpiti.

“We’re fortunate to have an Older Person’s Advisory Group that provides advice on the needs, thoughts, and ideas of people aged 65 and over living on the Coast,” says Mrs Engelen.

“And our Age Friendly Approach and Action Plan guides how we’re ensuring our residents can continue to be part of our community, and their physical and social needs are cared for as they get older.

“That’s what Seniors’ October is all about.”

Mrs Engelen says Council is pleased to be hosting some activities including the Kāpiti Coast Environmental Groups’ Catch-Up, Craft and Kōrero and an Open Session at the Makerspace at Paraparaumu Library, and Sit n Be Fit at Coastlands Aquatic Centre.

Seniors’ October will conclude with the Thrive! Kāpiti Seniors Expo on Wednesday 4 November, 9.30am to 2.30pm. The Expo will bring together local organisations, community groups and service providers. The day will be a great opportunity for older people to discover what's available across Kāpiti, learn about local services and programmes, and connect with others in the community.

The full calendar of events is available in a Seniors’ October booklet that can be found at Council’s libraries and pools, as well as Citizens Advise Bureaus, local business, clubs and retirement villages and online on Age Concern Kāpiti and Council’s websites.
