Mayors Taskforce for Jobs celebrates programme success

The Council Chambers were filled with pride, encouragement and celebration last Wednesday 2 September, as young people, employers, whānau and supporters came together for the Mayors Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ) prizegiving.
Hosted by Mayor Janet Holborow and Hayley Collett (Youth Employment Programme Lead), the event recognised the achievements of young people who have embraced opportunities, developed new skills and taken important steps in their employment journeys.
Awards were presented to young people for their commitment, growth and success within the programme, as well as to employers who have invested in local talent and providing supportive workplaces where young people can thrive.

It was a heartwarming event, showcasing the independence and purpose that meaningful employment can bring. Programme participant Tiana shared how quickly her circumstances changed with support from the team.
"Hayley helped me get a job so fast. I tried on my own without any success. Having a job has given me confidence, real-life experience and I can pay for my petrol! The best thing is being independent and being able to pay my way. It also gives me motivation to get out of the house and get outside."
Another young person, Tyrone, spoke about the positive impact having a job has had on his everyday life. "I feel so much more motivated. Having a job and a purpose takes away the boredom."
Their stories reflect the experiences of many young people recognised at the event, demonstrating how employment provides more than just an income, building confidence, creating connections, developing skills, all the while giving young people a greater sense of purpose.
Employers spoke proudly about the young people they had welcomed into their businesses and watched grow in capability and confidence.
There was also a special mention to some of our internal teams, with four young people placed in various roles across Council. The MTFJ prizegiving was a reminder of what can be achieved when young people are given opportunities to succeed, and when employers are willing to invest in their potential.
