Resource consent

A resource consent is a written decision from the Council about something that may affect the environment or your community. You need a resource consent to subdivide your property, or if any part of your building work doesn’t comply with the Kāpiti Coast Operative District Plan 2021.

Activities that may need a resource consent include:

  • earthworks
  • building on land with ponding or drainage issues
  • subdividing a property.

You may need to apply for both a building consent and a resource consent.

Despite having a building consent, you may not be able to build without a resource consent and vice versa.

Applications must be lodged separately and are considered under different legislation. Some resource consent conditions or district plan requirements require building work to satisfy the requirement for which building consent is needed, for example, water management requirements.
