Community grants
This year the Community Grant Scheme is focused on grassroots projects and activities that help make Kāpiti a great place for everyone.

The Community Grants were designated for the purpose of one or more of the following outcomes:
- building resilient, sustainable communities
- encouraging greater community participation
- improving the quality of life of the participants
- working in partnership with a range of community groups, including iwi/hapū
Applications are assessed against the criteria by a Council officer.
Timeline
- Tuesday 24 February 2026 - Opening of Community Grants applications 2026/27
- 5pm, Tuesday 24 March 2026 - Closing of applications
- Tuesday 5 May - Grants Allocation Committee meet to decide recipients
- Wednesday 6 May - Earliest starting date for projects
- Applicants will be advised of decision
- Friday 12 June - Grants will be distributed by this date, or on receipt of invoice for GST-registered organisations.
Community Grants project must take place between 5 May 2026 and 5 May 2027.
Criteria
Community grant applications must aim to achieve the outcomes outlined above.
Any organisation or group applying for the grant must:
- Be a local not-for-profit organisation or community group
- Provide a local service that contributes to community wellbeing and development.
Funds can be used for:
- New programmes, projects or events
- Improvements or enhancements to existing programmes
- Training and recognition of volunteers
- Publicity or education material directly related to the aim of the programme, project or event.
- Equipment specific to the success of the programme, project or event meeting the outcomes outlined above.
- Transport services meeting specific mobility needs
- Administration costs specific to the outlined programme, project or event.
Funds cannot be used for:
- Purposes that do not directly relate to the social activity/programme or event meeting the outcomes outlined above.
- Sports, fitness, leisure and arts activities
- Capital expenditure and infrastructure costs (i.e., buildings and facility improvements)
- Rent, subscriptions or wages not directly related to the project, programme or event
- General travel expenses
- Debt servicing
- Project or programmes that have already occurred
- Alcohol costs.

The Grant Allocation Committee will assess and make their decision on all applications at the decision meeting Tuesday, 5th May 2026.
Accountability
All Community Grant recipients are required to provide a short, simple report back by completing the Accountability Form. This will outline the benefits gained from the grant, as well as include receipts from the use of the funds.
- Online accountability forms are preferred and can be found on the Smartygrants portal
- Login to the SmartGrants portal with your email and password which was created when your initial grant application was made.
- Once logged in, click on “My Submissions”. You will then see your Community Grant application.
- Click the drop-down arrow next to your total amount requested, and you should see the associated accountability form, ready for you to complete.
