Kāpiti Coast District Council recognised as a District Tourism Organisation
6 Jul 2026
Kāpiti Coast District Council is now recognised as a District Tourism Organisation (DTO).
Kāpiti Coast Mayor Janet Holborow says becoming a DTO will raise the district’s profile within the visitor sector, support the local visitor economy, and strengthen our destination tourism work.
“DTO membership formally recognises the destination tourism role already being delivered in Kapiti,” says Mayor Holborow.
“While we officially became a DTO on 1 July, the membership has already strengthened our connection to national tourism discussions and opened more opportunities to work with other DTOs and Regional Tourism Organisations (RTO) to promote Kāpiti as a destination, grow visitor experiences and attract future investment.
“DTO status provides an opportunity to provide input and advocate for tourism infrastructure, regional marketing, and visitor services.
“Access to central government tourism funding is generally limited to approved tourism bodies, such as RTOs and DTOs, so this step could also open the door to additional support.”
The Economic Development Kotahitanga Board and the Tourism Advisory Board have been leading work to support the enhanced delivery of Kapiti’s destination branding and marketing, product development, industry capability, research and insights and event strategy; all critical activities of a DTO.
“We acknowledge the valuable mahi of both boards in helping us reach this point,” says Mayor Holborow.
“Officially being recognised as a DTO comes at an important time for our tourism sector.
“Central government has just released their new tourism policy for system settings and future investment. Being part of the national network will help ensure Kāpiti Coast is well placed to contribute to benefit from future opportunities.”
