Peka Peka to Ōtaki – Old State Highway 1 revocation
Upgrade work on Old State Highway 1 between Peka Peka and Ōtaki is now complete, marking a significant milestone in its transition from a busy state highway to a people-friendly local road.
Over the past four years, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi has invested around $13 million to prepare the corridor for transfer to Council. Improvements include new road surfaces, refreshed road markings and signage, upgraded drainage and safer intersections.
New pedestrian crossings and footpaths provide better connections through Ōtaki, making it easier and safer for people to get around and visit local shops and businesses. Shared paths and clip-on bridges at the Ōtaki River and Waitohu Stream also form part of the corridor and will become Council assets.
These improvements reflect the road’s changing role and will help create a safer, more accessible environment for residents, businesses and visitors.
