Contractors' 'Less Waste’ initiatives

21 Apr 2026

We’re passionate about sending less waste to landfill, and we invite you to join us in making a real difference through waste elimination, reduction and diversion practices.

Taking action for less waste

There are many practical ways contractors can show leadership in Less Waste practices on council projects.

Starting at the source makes a big difference. Planning early for waste reduction, setting up effective recycling systems for materials like metals, concrete and timber, and finding opportunities to reuse construction materials can significantly reduce what ends up in landfill.

Using digital documentation and project planning helps cut down on paper waste, while smart design and good resource management can create cost savings upfront.

We also encourage you to connect with Otaihanga Zero Waste.  They're an amazing local resource and partner, offering guidance on waste diversion options and sustainable disposal solutions.

Other actions you might consider include:

  • on-site waste sorting
  • staff training on sustainable practices
  • working with local recycling facilities
  • composting organic waste
  • donating reusable materials to community groups.

All of these steps help keep valuable resources in use and support a more circular approach to construction and maintenance work in Kāpiti.

Grant funding support

Grant funding is available for support contractors delivering council contracts to achieve stronger Less Waste outcomes.

Funding can help trial new approaches, improve waste systems, or support initiatives that reduce construction and demolition waste.

Eligibility criteria apply, and funding is prioritised for key outcome areas, including construction and demolition waste.

Procurement assessment integration

We know that contractors who actively reduce waste bring long-term value that goes well beyond costs alone.

As part of our procurement process, we'll be including waste reduction and diversion initiatives alongside other assessment criteria. This may include:

  • waste management plans
  • your environmental track record
  • innovative approaches to resource efficiency
  • how you work with local sustainability partners like Otaihanga Zero Waste.

This approach helps ensure our supplier partnerships support Less Waste outcomes and recognise contractors who share our commitment to caring for the Kāpiti Coast environment.
