37 groups receive funding to Strengthen Community and Creativity across the Kāpiti Coast

26 May 2026

Kāpiti Coast District Council has awarded funding to 37 local groups to support a diverse range of community-focused and creative projects across the district for 2025/26

The recipients were selected through the Creative Communities Scheme and the Community Grants Scheme, with funds going to groups or projects demonstrating clear positive social outcomes for Kāpiti Coast residents.

Funded by Creative New Zealand and administered by the Council, the Creative Communities Scheme will distribute around $23,000 among successful recipients, with the average grant around $2,000.

This year, it is supporting initiatives including kapa haka, professional children’s theatre, creative writing workshops, a Matariki comedy showcase, youth creative access workshops, theatrical performances, and more.

Community Grants Advisor Nerita Clark says the funding round drew strong interest.

"This funding round saw an impressive and diverse range of applications, making it a tough selection process for Council's Grants Allocation Subcommittee," says Ms Clark.

“The successful projects will provide opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get involved in our district’s vibrant creative scene - whether performing, creating, or enjoying the creativity and connection with other people.”

The Community Grants fund will distribute $40,000 among 24 successful recipients, with individual grants of up to $2,000. The scheme focuses on grassroots not-for-profit projects responding to identified local needs.

Funded projects will deliver services across fire safety, food support, benefit advocacy, counselling, conservation, education, and health, and initiatives such as free pēpi essentials and 'good bitch baking'.

Kāpiti Coast District Councillor and Grants Allocation Committee Chair Glen Olsen says the response from the community was strong.

"Thank you to the 39 groups who made an application to the Community Grants.  This number reflects the strength and breadth of volunteer groups making Kāpiti a great place for our residents," says Cr Olsen.

"Their projects provide a wide range of services and support, and we’re pleased to recognise and back their important work.

“Both grant schemes support Council's priority of enhancing recreation, employment, and community wellbeing across the district and partnering with others to deliver shared outcomes for all.”
