Funding boost to back affordable housing ideas on the Kāpiti Coast
1 May 2026
Applications open today for a new round of contestable seed funding. $85,000 is available through the Community and Affordable Housing Seed Fund which is funded from the previous government’s Better Off Funding.
Acting Kāpiti Coast Mayor Martin Halliday says this fund recognises the community concern around affordable and social housing provision in Kāpiti, and the importance of collaboration and innovation across the community for its delivery.
“We know housing affordability for locals in Kāpiti is challenging. This seed funding is about backing good ideas early, helping organisations and community groups take the next steps towards practical and locally-led housing solutions.”
Free independent housing advice for seniors at Paraparaumu Library – one of the 2024 seed fund initiatives from the Homes for Good Trust.
“It is fantastic that Council is able to leverage central government funding opportunities proactively to support and enhance community delivery in the housing space, rather than using ratepayer funds,” says Acting Mayor Halliday.
“We were very impressed by the successes of our 2024 recipients which saw the introduction of housing support and advice for older people, a student-led training programme completing 10 tiny homes, which is ongoing, and the construction of 10 new affordable rentals in Paekākāriki among the initiatives.”
“This latest round builds on that momentum, inviting organisations to bring forward proposals that can help address housing affordability and accessibility across the Kāpiti Coast,” says Acting Mayor Halliday.
“Seed funding is all about getting things started or moving things along. We’re looking for applications that support early-stage planning, partnership development, or prep work that will enable future delivery of healthy, affordable and accessible homes, including projects that strengthen Iwi/Māori housing aspirations and contribute to wider community wellbeing.”
Not-for-profits, community organisations, Iwi/Māori and others interested in applying, or wanting advice on whether their proposal is suitable, are encouraged to contact Council’s housing team at [email protected].
Applications will need to align with Council’s Housing Strategy and meet eligibility criteria. More information on the criteria and how to apply can be found here.
Applications close on Friday 5 June.
